Galette des Rois

From New Year’s Day until Monday, January 31, Pastry Boutique will offer two different varieties of Galette des Rois, courtesy of French Pastry Chef, Julien Perrinet, available in classic ‘frangipane’ and chocolate. Made with puff pastry and an almond cream filling, Chef Julien has renewed his original ‘frangipane’ pie that contains a small almond instead of the figure. Park Hyatt Tokyo’s porcelain ‘feve’ which comes in a box, is our very own character, Gutsy, the boy who greets and invites happiness to guests from above the hotel’s main entrance.

This French new year’s tradition originates more than 2000 years ago when on the evening of December 25, the three kings (known as ‘les rois mages’) observed an unusually bright shining star in the night sky. They knew that this signified the birth of Jesus Christ. The three kings immediately began their long journey to Bethlehem, arriving on January 6, the day that is currently known as the day of “Epiphany”, or “Three Kings’ Day”.

Perhaps the most fun part of eating Galette des Rois is the traditional game associated with this treat where the youngest person must hide under the table, while the oldest is responsible for cutting the pie. The person hiding under the table must specify which slice to give people by saying someone’s name while the oldest is pointing at a slice. The person who receives the slice with the ‘feve,’ a small porcelain figure hidden inside becomes king for the day and will receive good luck in the year to come.
